Why are some people cursed. Some people just can't but help find bad luck. A dark storm cloud seems to surround them everywhere they go. Some people seem constantly destined to be in trouble. They are the ones who are picked up on speeding cameras. They are the ones who get blamed.
I think of the poor child born to refugees fleeing Central America and now imprisoned in camps along the Texas border. They have done nothing to deserve their fate. Yet they find themselves in cages like any prisoner. These children did not cause the problems in their homeland. They were born poor and thus they have problems.
Why are some people blessed? Some people seem to be born with silver spoons in their mouths. They avoid trouble. They do well when others do not.
Some people are born blessed. Although there are people who are much richer than I am, I know that in terms of the world, I am very blessed. I have a roof over my head. I have food to eat and water to drink. I can read. I have money to buy all I need. That makes me very fortunate in the world. I didn't ask to be born in Canada to a middle class family. I did nothing to deserve that privileged position in the world yet it was given to me.
Some people think that God decides our fates. God alone decides whether we are born rich or poor. I cannot abide with that theology. I cannot think of a good reason why God would favour a few people over another. It would be a cruel God who would make so many suffer and bless a few privileged people for no good reason other than just because. My God is loving and compassionate not cruel and spiteful.
Things such as poverty, inequality, exorbitant wealth, and discrimination are human created institutions. God did not make some people destitute, while others are able to buy air conditioned dog houses. Poverty, wealth, are all human creations. Instead of blaming God for these things, we must blame our institutions and work for a fairer world. Together we can make our world a better place. Blessings.
